
Weekends you’ll find me at the Treasures ‘n Trash flea market down on Old Grafton Road. All the regulars know me there; I’ve been a regular myself for nearly thirty years. The wife and I arrive early on Saturdays so we can be all set up and ready for the first treasure hunters by 6:30 AM.

The granite stelai were eight feet tall, with mottled gray surfaces and jagged edges. But Craig was less interested in their geometry than in their metaphysical location, their agency as delimiters between this world and some mystical other. His heart raced and he took a step back.

The impossibility of it all was offset by the attractiveness of Mavka’s offer. So much so, he was unable to focus at work. His mind was roiling with possibilities and not a little fear.
It had been a month of relentless pounding.
